Hotel bookings around the Sydney Marathon’s start and finish lines jumped 49 per cent year-on-year over the weekend, as more than 40,000 runners descended on the city for the event.

Trip.com data revealed the sharp increase in accommodation demand following the TCS Sydney Marathon on 30 August, with hotel bookings across North Sydney and Sydney CBD – where the marathon started and finished respectively – up 49 per cent per cent year-on-year. Hotel searches also surged 69 per cent.

The uplift extended to air travel, with domestic flight bookings to Sydney up 47 per cent year-on-year and international flight bookings rising 31 per cent over the marathon period. Overall Trip.com search demand for Sydney across flights and hotels was up 47 per cent year-on-year.

The surge came as the Sydney Marathon continued to build its global profile after becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major last year. More than 123,000 runners entered the ballot for this year’s race – a 56 per cent increase from 2025 and the highest in the event’s history – with more than 40,000 runners from over 140 countries taking part.

International visitors also turned their marathon trip into a multi-day stay, booking an average of 4.2 nights – up 26 per cent year-on-year. The longer stays gave visitors more time to explore Sydney beyond race day.

Other Trip.com travel trends around the Sydney Marathon included:

• Mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore were the top three international markets booking Sydney hotels near the marathon site.
• 27 August was the busiest arrival day ahead of the marathon.
• International participants planned further ahead, booking their Sydney hotels an average of 82 days in advance, compared with 67 days for domestic travellers.

The booking trends underscored the growing tourism pull of major sporting events and the rise of “sportcations”, with travellers building multi-day trips around marquee events and making more of their time in the host city.
