At least seven flights and an Israel-bound cruise ship have been targeted by bomb threats, but no explosives have been found.

A series of bomb threats against passenger flights across Europe prompted emergency searches, briefly shut an airport outside Warsaw and saw the Italian Air Force escort a Ryanair plane into Rome – all of them proved false.

Ryanair appeared to be the hardest hit, with four of its flights to different destinations targeted. Two of its services, from Lisbon and Dublin, were searched at Rome’s Fiumicino airport after anonymous tips. Parts of Murcia airport in south-eastern Spain were cordoned off after a threat against a Ryanair flight from Manchester.

In Poland, one of the flights that landed at Warsaw Chopin was travelling from London Heathrow with 181 people on board. An SAS aircraft from Copenhagen also landed at Warsaw after receiving a threat. Polish carrier LOT and Wizz Air were also among the airlines affected.

In Greece, the Panama-flagged Crown Iris was evacuated as a precaution while anchored off the island of Syros. The ship, bound for Haifa in Israel, was carrying about 1500 passengers and crew. A coast guard dog and diver searched the vessel after an unknown caller claimed an explosive device had been attached to the hull. No device was found and the ship was expected to resume its voyage.

Aviation risk advisory firm Osprey Flight Solutions described the volume of threats as exceptional. Analysis output manager Rhys Jones said seven confirmed bomb threats affecting flights in a single day was out of the ordinary.

No group has claimed responsibility and officials have not attributed blame. Some experts have pointed to Russia, while a British government spokesman called the threats against UK flights a malicious hoax, without saying how they were orchestrated.

The incidents follow other recent scares. On Monday, a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Sofia made an emergency landing in Budapest after a suspected bomb threat. Last month, a flight from Tel Aviv to Vienna made an emergency landing in Bulgaria following a threat.
