Australian Geographic Travel has added a small-group birdwatching tour of the Red Centre, with four departures scheduled for 2027.

Red Centre Birdwatching runs for six nights from a single base in Alice Springs, with day trips into the surrounding ranges. Guests travel in a 12-seater air-conditioned vehicle, with numbers capped at just seven.

Target species include the dusky grasswren, rufous-crowned emu-wren, painted finch, banded whiteface, spinifex pigeon and chiming wedgebill, as well as pink cockatoo, black-breasted buzzard and Bourke’s parrot. A lunch stop on Santa Teresa Road is a regular spot for western bowerbird.

The itinerary covers four gorges in Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park – Ormiston Gorge, Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye), Serpentine Gorge and Simpsons Gap – before heading to Trephina Gorge, Emily Gap and Jessie Gap in the East MacDonnell Ranges. The tour also includes a rarely visited Arrernte rock art site, with its exact location confirmed closer to each departure to help protect it.

Other inclusions are a behind-the-scenes tour of Alice Springs Desert Park, a visit to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, built in 1871 beside the waterhole the Arrernte call Atherreyrre, and a final evening at Earth Sanctuary for a gourmet barbecue dinner and guided stargazing.

The tour includes five breakfasts, five lunches and six dinners. Activity levels are easy to moderate, with short walks on uneven ground that can be skipped if needed.

Pricing starts from $6,290 per person twin share ($7,390 single), with private tours available on application. Departures are 16 May, 20 June, 27 June and 17 August 2027.
