SeaLink has appointed Craig Heron as chief operating officer, with a remit to lead its marine operations as the business strengthens its transport network across Australia and expands into New Zealand.

Heron joins from TT-Line Company, operator of Spirit of Tasmania, where he was general manager, port operations, overseeing landside port operations across passenger, freight, security and terminal services.

He brings more than 20 years of operational and executive leadership experience across maritime transport, including global shipping, ports, terminals, stevedoring and island ferry services.

Kelsian Group CEO, Graeme Legh, said Heron’s experience would be invaluable in leading the next phase of growth.

“Craig understands the complexities of marine transport and the importance of delivering services that people and communities not just depend on but can also rely on,” he said.

“He brings strong operational experience, a practical approach to leadership and a clear focus on people, safety and performance. We’re pleased to have him leading SeaLink as we strengthen our operations and pursue new opportunities.”

Expanding SeaLink’s marine footprint

Heron said his first few weeks with the business had reinforces his optimism about the opportunities ahead.

“What has stood out to me in these first few weeks is the depth of experience across SeaLink and the pride our people take in the services they deliver,” he said.

“We have teams doing important work every day, connecting communities and supporting the people and businesses that rely on us. That’s a strong foundation to continue to build on.

“I’ve seen the first of our new larger ferries to Kangaroo Island commence this week and the second new vessel is on its way to South Australia. I am looking forward to getting to know more of our people and operations, listening to their ideas and working together with the communities we serve to strengthen our services and make the most of the opportunities ahead.”

SeaLink is set to expand into New Zealand following the award of Auckland Transport’s Western Package ferry services contract earlier this year.

The contract was awarded following a successful joint bid by SeaLink and established local Auckland ferry operator Belaire Ferries, with services for the new contract scheduled to commence on 1 July 2027.

The acquisition brings together SeaLink’s marine transport experience and Belaire’s local knowledge, supported by investment in building five new vessels over five years for Auckland’s ferry network.
