Virgin Australia has told travel agents it is increasing its airfares as it moves to recoup losses from an increase in fuel costs. 

The airline informed agents of the increases in prices on Friday.

At its half year results the airline told investors it would mitigate losses from a surge in oil costs by increasing airfares and decreasing capacity.

The airline said it is cutting the number of seats across its network by 3 per cent in the 6 months to December 31, but is keeping earnings the same as the first half of the year due to increased airfares.

The news came just before the airline announced a new reward scheme for members of its Velocity Frequent Flyer program.

Under the Pick Your Bonus promotion, members can choose between earning double Velocity Points or double Status Credits on eligible Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights.

Members must activate their chosen bonus and book flights between 12 and 26 October, with travel completed by 30 November.

The promotion applies to eligible flights operated by Virgin Australia with a VA flight number, with reward seats, codeshare services and certain international flights excluded.
