Damascus, Sept. 29 (SANA) Syria’s General Authority for Borders and Customs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) discussed plans to develop border crossings, improve services for travelers and strengthen crisis and emergency preparedness.

They also discussed opportunities to work with international partners to secure equipment and strengthen staff capabilities in maritime search and rescue and responding to irregular migration.

The two sides also discussed expanding training and capacity-building programs, including in travel document inspection and fraud detection. They reviewed mechanisms for identifying needs through official channels and determining where support could improve efficiency and border-crossing procedures.

Badawi reviewed key projects to rehabilitate border crossings and expand their facilities, along with infrastructure priorities and equipment needs, including passenger halls, medical points, ambulance supplies and firefighting equipment.

He stressed the importance of coordinating support according to actual needs and operational priorities.
Carl welcomed the authority’s cooperation and its efforts to facilitate the work of IOM teams, reaffirming the organization’s readiness to continue coordination and explore opportunities to support border services, humanitarian response and crisis preparedness.

On Sept. 8, Nahla Othman, director of the Expatriates and Refugees Department at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry, held talks with Carl on strengthening coordination on Syrian refugees and facilitating their voluntary return.
