MILLTOWN – Saint Mark’s came out firing in their home field hockey game against St. Georges on Sept. 23, scoring three times in the first 18 minutes. That was enough as the Spartans went on to a 3-1 win over the Hawks for their first win of the season.

The Spartans were on the offensive from the start. They consistently pressured the St. Georges defense, earning a number of penalty corner opportunities throughout the first quarter. The Hawks repelled the first six, including one with a defensive save after the ball got behind the goalie.

Finally, Saint Mark’s broke through on their seventh corner. This time, the ball was sent toward Hawks goalie Abbigail Jamison, where several players from both teams attempted to hit it. Katherine Libonate got a bit of space and knocked it into the cage with 4:30 to go in the quarter for the early advantage.

It didn’t take long to double the advantage. Jamison made a save on another corner, but the Spartans retained possession and worked another penalty corner. This time, the ball was inserted to the top of the scoring circle, and Emma Gibbons was open to Jamison’s right. She found the opening next to the post two and a half minutes after the first goal.

The Spartans didn’t allow much from the St. Georges offense in the first quarter, but Robyn Clark did get free in the final minute. She went in on Spartans goalie Allison Simione (St. Margaret of Scotland Parish) one on one, but Simione turned the show away.

It was more green and gold throughout the second quarter. The Spartans were turned away by Jamison four times in one possession, but Camryn Londergan finally beat her with 12:13 on the clock for the third goal. Despite several more chances, that would be the final tally for the Spartans.

Simione was significantly busier in the third quarter as St. Georges held the ball most of the time. The Hawks’ persistence paid off in the middle of the quarter as Clark knocked one home to the right of the goalie.

Saint Mark’s held a 10-4 shot advantage and earned 20 penalty corners to none for St. Georges. Simione had three saves. The Spartans (3-1) remain home on Friday at 3:45 p.m. against Mount Pleasant.

For the Hawks, Jamison had 13 saves. St. Georges fell to 0-4 and visits Appoquinimink on Friday at 6 p.m.
