MILLTOWN — Saint Mark’s put pressure on the Brandywine soccer team throughout their game on Sept. 17, and the Spartans methodically widened their lead on the way to a 4-0 shutout of the Bulldogs.

The Spartans had a corner kick in the third minute, and although they could not convert, that was a forecast of things to come. Bulldogs keeper Oscar Aguilar-Camacho made a stop in the fourth minute, and he came up with another a few minutes later on a Saint Mark’s free kick headed toward the net by Scott McDermott.

The Spartans broke through in the 13th, turning a steal into a goal and a lead. McDermott took a pass about 27 yards in front of the net and, while surrounded by white Brandywine jerseys, sent a low burner past Aguilar-Camacho into the left side of the net.

The Bulldogs found their offensive footing a bit after that, getting a free kick from about 40 yards out that was deflected, resulting in their first corner kick of the day. Spartans keeper Tom Swasey made the first of his two saves on the afternoon shortly thereafter.

Swasey played a role in the next Spartans goal. In extra time in the first half, he sent a goal kick straight up the middle of the pitch, and McDermott caught up to it. This time, he sent a shot past Bulldogs keeper Benjamin Lassiter, who had replaced an injured Aguilar-Camacho.

Justin Baxley increased the Spartans’ lead to 3-0 early in the second half. He finished a Saint Mark’s attack with a shot outside the reach of Lassiter.

Finally, in the 69th minute, Declan O’Connor closed out the scoring with a nifty turnaround shot that sailed about chest-high into the side of the net.

The Spartans improved to 2-0 with the win and will visit Tower Hill on 1 p.m. Saturday. Brandywine (0-2) visits Odyssey Charter on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m.
