Australian Border Force (ABF) officers were forced to manually process passengers at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane international airports after a 14-hour e-gate outage disrupted travel ahead of the school holidays.

The technical issue began around 9pm on Thursday, affecting both arriving and departing passengers. ABF deployed additional officers to manage queues while technicians worked to restore the system.

The gates were back online shortly after 11am on Friday, with queues subsequently easing.

An ABF spokesperson thanked travellers for their patience and confirmed the cause of the outage remained under investigation.

Disruption hits school holiday rush

The outage coincided with the start of school holidays in Queensland and Victoria, with airports preparing for increased international passenger traffic.

Brisbane Airport is forecasting a 6.1 per cent increase in international travel between 18 September and 12 October compared with the same period last year.

The disruption also came as Brisbane Airport opened a new 12-lane passport control area designed to improve passenger flow through its International Terminal.

Brisbane Airport executive general manager aviation Ryan Both said the relocated facility would deliver a simpler and faster experience for travellers.

“No one wants a stressful start to their holiday, which is why we’re excited to open this new passport control facility before the school holiday rush,” Both said.
