Hurtigruten has raised 1,002 bottles of Barolo from a top-secret location 34 metres beneath Arctic waters off northern Norway.

The event marks the debut of ‘Arctic Barolo’, which will see the bottles served exclusively to Hurtigruten’s guests as they sail the Norwegian coast.

The year-long experiment aimed to discover what would happen when one of Italy’s most celebrated wines was matured in the unique conditions of the high Arctic. The project saw Hurtigruten partner with renowned Italian winery Rivetto to submerge the bottles at 70° North, off the coast of Kirkenes in Norway, where they spent 12 months surrounded by cold Arctic waters at a near-constant temperature of approximately 5-6°C, in complete darkness and under around four bar of pressure.

“Taking one of Italy’s great wines and placing it in such conditions might sound bizarre, but that sense of curiosity is exactly what made the project so exciting,” Hurtigruten front of house and beverage director Tani Gurra said. “Now our guests will be able to taste the result while sailing through the very same Arctic waters where the wine spent the past year.”

Rivetto, a certified organic and biodynamic estate, produced the wine in Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of the Barolo region. The Barolo underwent its traditional maturation, including 24 months in large oak casks before submerging underwater.

“What made this project special was bringing together Rivetto’s winemaking heritage with Hurtigruten’s deep connection to the Norwegian coast,” Rivetto owner Enrico Rivetto said. “Tasting the wine after a year beneath the Arctic was fascinating, and knowing guests will now experience it while sailing those same waters makes the story even more meaningful.”

Hurtigruten built environmental responsibility into the experiment from the outset, with a fully retrievable installation and marine-safe materials used throughout. The cruise line removed every bottle and all equipment from the seabed after the maturation period.
