Viking has floated out Viking Astrea, the company’s second hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions, marking the first time the ship has touched water.
The cruise line scheduled Viking Astrea for delivery in May 2027 and she will spend her inaugural season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
“The float out of the Viking Astrea represents another important milestone for Viking,” Viking president and chief executive officer Leah Talactac said. “From the beginning, we have sought thoughtful ways to design more efficient ships, and the Viking Astrea is an important step forward in that ongoing effort.”
The cruise line held the float out ceremony at at Fincantieri’s Ancona Shipyard. The ceremony denotes a ship is moving into its final stage of construction. After a two-day process that will set the Viking Astrea afloat, Viking will then move her to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.

Viking Astrea is classified as a small ship and has a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons, with 499 staterooms that can host 998 guests. She is a sister ship in Viking’s award-winning ocean fleet and will have a propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. The propulsion system will allow the ship to navigate and operate with zero emissions.
Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM) enabled the ship’s state-of-the-art propulsion system, which can produce up to six megawatts of power.
The Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions, is scheduled for delivery in November 2026. Viking floated out the vessel earlier this year.
