Australia MD Tim Oakes is set to leave Inside Travel after nearly 11 years.
Oakes joined Inside Travel in 2016 as the founding member of its Australian operation. He went on to grow the business from a start-up venture into an organisation generating $29 million in annual turnover.
“After nearly 11 years of leadership at Inside Travel, I have decided that the time is right to begin the next chapter of my career,” Oakes said.
“During my tenure at Inside Travel, we grew the Australian operation from zero to approximately $29 million in turnover, successfully established our InsideJapan and InsideAsia brands in the Australian market and built a strong leadership team for the future.
“It has been an incredible privilege to work alongside talented colleagues around the world and help grow a business that is respected throughout the industry for its expertise, values and commitment to exceptional travel experiences. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together.”
During his leadership, the Australian branch navigated significant industry challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, while strengthening its reputation as one of Australia’s leading specialists in travel to Japan and wider Asia.
An ‘extraordinary’ contribution
Inside Travel Group Co-Founder Simon King said Oakes had made an extraordinary contribution to both the business and the broader Australian travel industry.
“When Tim joined us in 2016 to launch our Australian operation, we knew we had someone with the vision, determination and leadership qualities to build something extraordinary.
“What he and the team have achieved over the past decade has exceeded all expectations. Australia has become a significant part of the global business, with a strong reputation among travellers, trade partners and industry peers.
“Beyond the commercial success launching 11 Asian destinations in market, Tim has built a strong culture and leadership team that leaves the business exceptionally well positioned for the future.
“On behalf of everyone at Inside Travel, I would like to thank Tim for his dedication, leadership and friendship over the past 11 years. We wish him every success in the next chapter of his career,” King said.
As part of a planned leadership transition, Nicole Newport will step into the role of Interim Australia Managing Director.
Oakes’ final day with the business will be 11 September 2026.
