Intrepid Travel has revealed its 2027 Not Hot List, naming 10 lesser-visited destinations it wants travellers to consider in 2027.

The list aims to steer tourists away from overcrowded hotspots. Instead, it highlights places that could benefit from more visitors.

Samburu National Reserve in Kenya tops the list. It is followed by Mestia in Georgia and Jordan’s Northern Highlands.

Meanwhile, Whitehorse in Canada and the Greek island of Alonnisos round out the top five.

Dili in Timor-Leste also makes the cut. Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail, Liepāja in Latvia, Chile’s Carretera Austral and Dalsland in Sweden complete the list.

Intrepid selected destinations that receive fewer visitors than comparable locations. Crucially, they must also have the infrastructure and capacity to welcome more tourists.

The company also considered improved connectivity, new infrastructure and major events.

Tackling overtourism

This year, several destinations were chosen as alternatives to established tourism hotspots.

For example, Kenya is trying to spread safari tourism beyond its busiest parks. Samburu offers travellers another option.

Similarly, Chile’s Carretera Austral provides an alternative to Patagonia’s more heavily travelled routes.

“If we want tourism to continue to be a force for good, we need to constantly rethink how and where we travel,” Intrepid general manager experiences Erica Kritikides said.

“The Not Hot List isn’t just about surfacing lesser-known places, it aims to shift the conversation and help travellers to discover new destinations where their visit can make a meaningful contribution to local communities and economies.”

Previous ‘Not Hot’ destinations boom

Intrepid said previous editions of the list have driven strong booking growth.

For example, travel to Pakistan rose 67 per cent year-on-year after it appeared on the list. Kyrgyzstan bookings increased 62 per cent.

Meanwhile, bookings for Intrepid’s Trans-Mongolian Railway Adventure surged 298 per cent between 2024 and 2025. The itinerary includes Sainshand, which featured on the 2025 list.

Intrepid is also backing this year’s list with five new trips.

The itineraries cover Kenya, Canada and Alaska, Sri Lanka, Jordan and Georgia.

Closer to Australia, Dili is another destination to watch.

Timor-Leste recently joined ASEAN. In addition, new flights and infrastructure upgrades are making the country easier to explore.

However, it remains one of Southeast Asia’s least-visited destinations.
