Australians took a record 17.3 million domestic caravan and camping trips in 2025, up 14 per cent year‑on‑year, spending $12.6 billion, according to new Tourism Research Australia data.
NSW was the leading destination, attracting 5.5 million domestic caravan and camping visitors who spent 18.2 million nights in the state.
The data is also challenging the traditional image of the Australian caravan traveller. Of NSW’s domestic caravan and camping visitors, 43 per cent were in full‑time employment, while the largest income cohort had a household income of $100,000–$149,999.
With almost one in every seven domestic overnight trips now involving a caravan or camping experience, the figures point to a broader shift in how Australians are choosing to holiday, with caravanning increasingly becoming a lifestyle choice for working professionals, couples and families rather than simply a retirement pursuit.
